Cape Naturaliste, Western Australia

Aboriginal Experience

Josh Whiteeland is excellent at finding unique bush flavours and explaining his people’s Indigenous calendar, which has six seasons. He offers three immersive experiences exploring one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, the only one in Australia. The Margaret River region, part of this diverse South Western zone, is both peaceful and wild. The Cape to Cape walking track winds through its rugged coastline, tall tree forests, and wildflower-covered scrubland. Using the track as a guide, Josh shares insights into the land’s natural history, spanning millions of years of ecology and generations of Indigenous perspectives.

During the tours, Josh points out rare wildflowers, offers tastings of fragrant native plants like bush celery or saltbush, and explains the significance of the six seasons. He also shares Dreaming stories connecting the past and present, weaving tales about the region’s oceans, sea life, rivers, animals, and native plants.

With Cape Cultural Tours, you can explore 2.5km of the track around Cape Naturaliste, visit the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse, or go fishing in Meelup Regional Park, where whales and dolphins are often seen in clear turquoise waters.

The first two tours start with a ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony, featuring a mesmerising didgeridoo performance and an interpretation of Aboriginal artefacts. For groups of 10 or more, there’s an option for a native food tasting and barbecue with Australian flavours like kangaroo, emu, and local seafood, enhanced with Geraldton wax leaves and lemon myrtle butter. All tours are suitable for both children and adults with varying levels of athletic ability.
